My engine has always run well, but I was curious about testing the compression on it as it is a 1986. To my astonishment, cynlinder 1 and 2 were at 115.and 3 at 80 and 4 at 75!
I agree - right around 9:1 with stock deck height and composition gaskets. The stock 307 compression ratio was advertised at 9:1 with 69-70cc heads, but it actually came in a . The type and model is what matters in an outboard’s compression readings. Not necessarily the hp or size. Some of the 9.5’s had 65-75 lbs when new. The late 80’s 200 hp .
I did a compression test on my 307 today. Here are the results: cylinder 1: 150 psi " 3: 150 psi" 5: 152 psi" 7: 170 psi ?? I tested that one three times??? The first stroke went all . Jeff could have easily infused a lot of compression and cam into the little 307 and built a monster mill. He wanted a civilized street engine with a good torque curve and high rpm . I finally did a compression test on all cylinders yesterday and came up with 140 lbs dry/ 145 wet on each with some small variance. My compression before rebuild (when .
The head we use is the spec head for the SST60 motor. On the SST60 motor that head produces 180 lbs compression. We tested different heads on different motors to find one that improved .

Compression testing will reveal intake and exhaust valve leaks and leaks past the rings and in few cases head gasket leaks. To find cooling system leaks, you MUST do a cooling system pressure check. . Re: 50 HP Evinrude compression 80 PSI compression is on the low side. Should be over 100 and closer to 120 - 135. Before getting to carried away, decarb the engine as was suggested. SeaFoam and Deep Creep are the same product only Deep Creep is the spray version. It can be found at most auto stores and farm stores that sell auto parts.
Primary Compression Test. Your 2-stroke outboard powerhead is an efficient pump. The crankcase must be completely sealed against pressure created upon the down stroke of the piston and the vacuum that’s created when the cylinders piston moves upward back to TDC (top dead center). . 1972-1976 65 HP 3 cylinder 1965-1971 4 cylinder 1976-1983: . I don't think so. You can post on you tube and then give a link though. Re: 1972 Evinrude 65 HIGH compression? I've always considered the OMC three cylinder motors pretty much as good as it gets, with the bigger twins running a close second. I've never really thought of them as good on gas though, of all my motors the threes are the hardest on gas, but I'm sure that's mostly due to engine size over the 60hp twins. Also OMC used the 307 beyond the end of automotive use (beyond 1973), to at least '76 (when the 305 started in cars). . A set of 1.94" intake valves would work nicely on a 307. Compression on the passenger & light truck 307s was 9:1 through 1970, then 8.25 after that. Gross horsepower was 200 through 1971. Net horsepower was 157 with TCS, or .
Happy New year to all. What would be a good compression reading for a 1970 evinrude 6 hp? I am getting 60 psi on both cylinders. The motor has not been run for about six years I have been told. Should the cylinders be soaked with a lube of a sort incase the rings are sticky? Any help here. This can be measured by mainly two methods Standard Proctor Compaction Test and Modified Proctor Compaction Test. Both the tests help to determine the optimum moisture content that is required for soil to attain maximum compaction i.e maximum dry density for performing construction. . Hi, I recently tore apart a 307 take out of a '70 Chevelle. My understanding is that this engine should have a 9:1 compression ratio in stock form. What I found was flat pistons with 4 small valve relief’s and 3927185 cylinder heads (70 cc). I believe the heads were original to the engine and the engine original to the car. Just wondering what your opinion of a good compression range for a 1972 Johnson 2hp outboard? My compression is 95 psi. thanks . Joe Reeves Supreme Mariner. Joined Feb 24, 2002 Messages 13,262. Re: Evinrude 25hp Compression Compression pressures can vary from motor to motor depending on the static compression ratio. Compression only tests a small amount of the cylinder with absolute certainty and the rest can be damaged. Have the dealer perform a leakdown test, this can tell you the actual condition of the engine.

Also it's a single cylinder if it was a twin that would make compression testing easier. I know on old cars I've worked on if there's a 20 pound difference between cylinders then there's a issue. Not sure if that number applies on outboards or not.
Questions from the Darkside Mercury 9.8 1972
On a 4 stroke engine, most mechanics and dealers will perform a leak down test, to see how much pressure escapes over a set period of time. On a 2 stroke engine, a compression check is sufficient. Steps to performing a compression check: Obtain a compression gauge.

The first thing is allways do a compression test and a spark gap test with a open air spark gap tester. All the spark in the world will not fire a cylinder with low compression. You can make a spark gap tester it must jump a gap of at least 1/4 inch brite blue snap. Get back with compression numbers before we can go any further. What Outboard Compression Test Results Mean. Results vary depending on whether the outboard is a Four-Stroke or a Two-Stroke. Good results for Four-Strokes should be 180-210 PSI, and Two-Strokes should be around. The first thing that most people think of when they hear the words, "compression test," is expensive. Is that really the case though? Re: 1972 evinrude 6 hp Sorry and to check compression, bring your motor to operating temp, take out all your plugs, screw in the tester into one of the holes, get someone to turn your motor over, or pull start it about 4 to 5 times or until the tester reaches its limit, record reading, then follow through with remaining cylinders. Re: 18 hp evinrude COMPRESSION ???? i would say so. then when it is running, decarb it. enema for the motor. Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, .
Re: 1973 65 hp Evinrude: Compression test completed, what does it mean? Generally speaking, a compression value in one cylinder that is more than 10% off of the others, is considered to be an issue worthy of looking into. Additionally, a value of 97 psi is low for that engine. My 1972 Johnson 65hp motor still has values in the 140 psi range.

The horsepower and torque of the Chevy 307 engine varied slightly from 1968 to 1973. The 1968 to 1971 engines have a maximum brake horsepower of 200 at 5,800 revolutions per minute and a torque of 300 foot-pounds at 4,200 rpm. The 1972 engine has a maximum brake horsepower of 130 at 4,000 rpm with a torque of 230 foot-pounds at 2,400 rpm. Re: Compression for 1990 Evinrude XP 150 I might be a little concerned with the 85 psi hole, however readings in the mid 90's to low 100's are typical on V-6 carbed two stroke John/Rudes.Another factor is the procedure used in obtaining the numbers you posted and the accuracy of the compression guage.
